Basics of Coffee Grinders

Many people love to grind their own coffee beans to make their daily cup of coffee. It is known to be a fact that coffee starts losing its flavor once the beans are ground to powder. So, the more the number of days after the beans is powdered, the higher is the loss of flavor. For this reason, many people prefer to grind coffee beans on a regular basis to have their cup of coffee.

If you are planning on investing in a coffee grinder, you need to know more about the types of grinders that are available and what makes some of the grinders more expensive than the others.

Basically, there are two different types of coffee grinders, blade type and burr type of grinders. Let us now see and understand what these two types of grinders are and which one is best suited for your purpose.

Blade grinders are the most basic type of coffee grinders. This type is also the cheapest of grinders that are available on the market. These grinders work as the name indicates by the spinning of a blade within the grinder which reduces the coffee beans to a powder.

However, the quality of the powder that one can get with the blade grinder is not very uniform and consistent. Also, being basic machines, these grinders will not give you option of settings to help you determine the grind quality. It is only experience that will help you gain knowledge about the time for which you have to use the grinder to get the type of powder you need.

Burr grinders are the more expensive type of grinders. These work by crushing the coffee beans through the rotation of a grinding burr. The burr might be of two types, wheel and conical.

The wheel type of burr grinder uses a grinding wheel to reduce the coffee beans to powder. While this type is cheaper than the conical type, the noise generated by the grinder is much higher and the quality of the grind is not as high as you can get with the conical type.

The conical type of burr grinder is the one that most connoisseurs of coffee use and is the most expensive kind of grinders on the market. What make these grinders so expensive is the superior grind quality of these grinders and the low level of noise that is generated while the grinder is doing its job. The slow spinning of the burr in the grinder helps in reducing the noise level produced by the grinder.

When coffee grinders work to reduce the beans to powder, there is lot of static that is created. This makes the handling of the ground powder a very difficult and messy job. The level of static that is created is very high with blade grinders, lesser with the wheel type of burr grinders and very less with conical type of burr grinders. This makes the conical type the most clean and least messy of grinders.

Now that you have understood the various types of grinders that are available, you will be able to choose the one that fits your pocket and your needs with ease.
