Getting the Perfect Grind

Many people savor the pleasure of having a cup of coffee to kick start the day and many continue on this coffee drinking spree through the day. The pleasure of coffee drinking has gotten many people to invest in appliances such as coffee grinders and coffee makers to make their own fresh coffee.

Grinding the coffee afresh to make the brew helps give you a fresh cup of coffee. But, if you do not know how to get the right and perfect grind, you might just end up spoiling the taste and flavor of the coffee. So, it is important to know the different kinds of grinds and how to get the right fineness using your coffee grinder.

There are fundamentally three different types of grinds, namely, coarse grind, medium grind and the fine grind.

The coarse grind is one wherein the coffee beans are just ground to a coarse powder. This is a very basic type of grind and is generally preferred if a percolator is being used for making the coffee as finer coffee will just pass through the percolator and end up in the coffee that you are making.

The medium grind is finer in consistency than the coarse grind type of coffee. This is the consistency that is generally preferred by many coffee drinkers as it is the best type of grind to be used in most of the coffee makers that are commercially available. So, mostly regular coffee is made using this kind of a grind consistency.

Last but not the least is the fine grind. This kind of consistency is generally used in espresso coffee machines to make espresso coffee. These machines will not function if you use grind that is coarse or of medium consistency and needs fine consistency to work. Also, this consistency is preferred when Turkish coffee, a coffee delight for many is prepared.

Let us now understand how to get the perfect grind that you prefer using a coffee grinder at home.

If you use a coffee grinder of a burr type, then it is pretty easy to get the grind quality that you need. All you need to do is understand the settings that are provided with the grinder to give you the grind quality that you choose. Experience will teach you to select the appropriate settings to get the right consistency of grind.

But, the problem arises if you are using a basic blade type of grinder as these have no settings to regulate the grind quality. Also, running the grinder for long periods of time will cause alteration to the flavor of the coffee due to the heating of the blades. You will just have to use the grinder and with experience you will learn to get the right consistency without causing any alterations to the flavor.

Usually, it requires about 10 seconds of grinding to get a coarse ground coffee, about 15 seconds of grinding for a medium consistency and around 30 seconds to get fine ground coffee. But, you should remember that higher quantities of coffee grinding might need some additional time than what is mentioned to get the right consistency of grind.
